I Couldn’t Help But Laugh by Kasey O

Laughter

I have battles with negative emotions when dealing with problems. I put myself down for the smallest of things because I feel inadequate. And I would never put someone else down – but when it comes to myself, it happens so often pain becomes my ‘comfort zone.’

During breakfast, my love Niko and I were discussing a growth area for me. He was giving me helpful advice, but my body language and facial expression shifted from looking open and alert, to sad and discouraged. Then he said something that changed my entire perspective. He said, “Kasey, why is your body language defeated by the problem instead of celebratory because you have the answer? ‘Problems’ literally point us to the area of our life that need solutions. Solutions lead to improvement, so we can be thankful for the revelation problems bring, and then celebrate once we know the answer.”

As he spoke to me I began grasping this thought of ‘celebrating the solutions’ rather than beating myself up for ‘causing a problem.’ As I hopped in the shower, I felt a whisper that said, “Laugh.” The negativity was trying to overpower me, but I began to giggle. The giggle grew into laughter. I thought at first that I was crazy for laughing, but another whisper came to me. The Holy Spirit said to me, “I have given you a loud laugh, so laugh, break the chains of negativity, self-condemnation, and depression off of you. The enemy will do everything he can to keep you from laughing.”

In that moment I learned that laughter is powerful. Chains were breaking off of my spirit, my mind, and my heart as I laughed. In the middle of that joyful feeling, I physically felt taller and lifted while indulging in joy. Studies have shown that laughter really is one of the best medicines for us. Counselors say that laughter is actually one of the biggest depression and anxiety busters. Laughter kicks into gear anti-depressant chemicals to the brain and helps to lift our spirits. And because of that, laughter is a weapon against darkness and sadness. When we laugh we are re-identifying ourselves with what is right and true and de-identifying ourselves with darkness and depression.

“Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles of any kind come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing.”  James 1:2-4

So, next time a trial comes our way, let’s do what these verses say, and see the bright side. Let’s allow ourselves to grow, to become wiser, and to become stronger. We need laughing without fear of the future. Even if it feels weird, giggle at problems and know that God works everything for our good, and because of that, there is truly nothing to worry about.

This reminds me how sometimes we gotta praise our way out of our trials. God is so good because He promises that we will laugh without fear of the future. Usually when I am In situation I get frustrated and angry which is the opposite of what you were saying here.
